Borderlands 4

Author: Taylor Crisostomo

After years of speculation and vault-sized silence, Borderlands 4 finally has a confirmed release date, and it's sooner than expected. Gearbox's next chaotic lootfest launches September 12th, 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The newly announced Switch 2 version drops just a few weeks later on October 3rd.

Borderlands 4 Goes Dark, Weird, and Way More Open

Six years after Borderlands 3, the galaxy’s gotten messier. Borderlands 4 drops you on Kairos, a once hidden planet thrown into chaos after the moon Elpis crash-landed into orbit. That little cosmic accident tore the veil off Kairos and sparked an open revolt against its overlord, a tyrant called The Timekeeper. Now, resistance groups like the Crimson Resistance and The Rippers are pushing back and you, of course, are caught in the middle.

Four Vault Hunters, Four Ways to Cause Problems

You’ve got four brand-new Vault Hunters to choose from, and yes, they’re as over-the-top as ever:

  • Vex the Siren is a ghost-summoning, trash-talking empath with a chip on her shoulder and a soft spot buried deep under layers of sarcasm. She’s here to wreck tyrants and maybe feel something along the way.

  • Rafa the Exo-Soldier is a gravity-defying rebel whose body is fused with tech after a shady deal with Tediore went bad. He’s on borrowed time, and he’s not wasting a second of it.

  • Harlowe the Gravitar is a giddy science nerd turned battlefield menace, packing Maliwan-grade gadgets and a smile that says, “I will absolutely melt your face off, and explain how I did it.”

  • Amon the Forgeknight is a poetic beast-slayer forged in cult trauma and Vault monster blood. He’s here for vengeance, sure—but also vibes and storytelling.

Two more Vault Hunters are coming post-launch via DLC, but Gearbox is keeping those under wraps for now.

A Bigger, Wilder Borderlands

Gearbox is promising Borderlands 4 will feel more open and explorable than ever. Kairos is split into four massive zones with seamless travel, dynamic weather, and a compass instead of a traditional mini map. A vehicle on-demand system lets you summon your ride whenever, and movement’s gotten a serious upgrade. Double jumps, gliding, grappling, climbing, and more. Traversal isn’t just for getting around anymore; it’s part of the fun.

Loot, Guns, and Chaos—With a Few Tweaks

Vault Hunters now come with three switchable Action Skills, each with customizable augments and capstones. Every character also has a unique passive trait that shapes their playstyle.

Grenades and heavy weapons now live together in a new ordnance slot, a shared category for all your “blow-everything-up” needs. These weapons use a cooldown system instead of traditional ammo, letting you go full mayhem, recharge, then do it again.

Also new:

Reparation kits, which can heal you or boost things like elemental damage, movement speed, or fire rate. Because who doesn’t love turning into a walking blender?

Borderlands 4 looks like it’s leaning into everything that makes the series tick, wild characters, big guns, fast movement but with a sharper edge and a more open-world feel. It’s still chaotic, but now the chaos might actually mean something. As opposed to the trying to stay relevant and up to date humor focused borderlands 3.
